The last few weeks have been mostly shooting bridal sessions for lucky H2bs. When you are looking for that special and unusual gift boudoir photography is becoming more and more a popular choice.

Most brides to be will bring their wedding underwear and possibly their veil to get their boudoir album to tie into their wedding theme, this isnt essential but it is a good idea.

A veil can be used in many ways to keep that wedding feel but also having that boudoir look to the image.

What does being a specialist actually mean, is it that the professional only works in one area, or is it that they put more time and effort into that area. I think for me its a bit of both, I started offering this style of photography after doing a boudoir party one October evening. It was so much fun, and the thank you emails I received from the participants were overwhelming.

Its not just about researching your area, its about being able to just do it! without having to think or worry that you will get it right first time.
I can now honestly say that I dont need to know what the person looks like whos booked their session with me as I have all the poses for all ages and sizes in my head, I know as soon as they walk into my studio which lighting style I will use and what will show their body shape off to its best.
Then all is needed is that little spark of the clients personality to make that image something they will love.

The proof, as above the 'wow's' amd 'ooo's' from the client and their partners/hsubands/friends.

The only down side to the job is that I cant show you every image, that quite rightly some clients want their photos to be private.

So anyway, yes I do specialise, but I also do other styles of photography, weddings, portraits, pets, it doesnt make my technical ability any less, and I think its good to have variety, putting 110% into all my photography not just my specialty is second nature.

Also not forgetting my brilliant make up artists, who do a fantastic job, we work as a team all the time and wouldnt have it any other way. Well back to the afternoon sunshine, lets hope spring has well and truely landed.

Well weve started our search for new premises and yesterday viewed the first possible property. The space itself was great, in an old mill however it had 2 flights of stairs which in the end we felt wouldnt be good for accessibilty or our general portrait side of the photography business.

We want to keep the atmopshere of our small and friendly studio but also give our clients a more bespoke experience when they come to us and ideally have 2 seperate studio spaces for portraiture and boudoir.

We have made a little change to our photography collections. To make it easier to choose which one you would like we now have a new album available and for those who don't want the album option you can now book your own a la carte session, where you buy your make up and photo session and have the freedom to choose which product you would like to display your images, be it canvas, prints, digital files or frames.

Our albums now come in 3 different size options and of course if theres a size not mentioned, just ask we can get other sizes and page variations if desired.

Well I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year and are getting well into those new years resolutions..

What did 2009 teach you? one of the things for me was that you get what you pay for. Insurance, products and photography.

I have been a bargain hunter for years but running my own business has made me realise its good to support local quality business and that sometimes paying more for a quality product in the long run saves you more than buying several of those cheaper items. I never compromise on the quality of the products I buy in for you, always looking for longevity and that wow factor. And as always if I find something better then I will use it.

Have spent today adding the option to pay by credit and debit cards online. I hope this will give my customers more options on how to pay for their shoot and any products.

Also gearing up for 2010, our price change will occur on 5th January 2010 so if you wish to take advantage of our 2009 pricing and even book for next year you can before this date.

We are pretty happy with our current product range we have a new coffee table album which will be with us soon and a few other things in the pipeline but you will have to wait till next year for those, I wont make the keeping you in suspenders joke ... promise!

Morning all,

Hadn't realised I haven't blogged since September! getting ready for christmas bookings has got me feeling festive already, a tad annoying I know.

I thought I would talk about boudoir a little bit this morning, with Gok Wan being back on the telly with How to Look Good Naked its sparked a lot of emails from ladies worrying about being plus size but still wanting a boudoir shoot.

As Gok proved and I prove most weeks size is no barrier , no really it isn't! when his lovely ladies have their photo shoots they sometimes use wraps or strategically placed objects to pose around, thats exactly what I do : enhance your great bits, and any bits you think you want hiding I hide them simple as that, well not quite I also use lighting and place it so it falls to flatter your figure and only give you poses that make you look your best.

I hope that answers your questions girls and as always give me a call for a chat.

Just a quick note about christmas we are now fully booked for October, November bookings need to be made soon if you want your album for christmas. New boudoir photography products

Hi all, hope you are well.

New products on the horizon for Autumn 2009, ' but you only had new products in spring' I hear you say. Well, due to our album supplier succumbing to the current economic climate and our stock being nearly all but used up, we have taken the opportunity to offer something different.

Firstly the box print, sized at 12x16inches it stands proud from the wall with a nice black or ash box frame, with your print sitting neatly inside. The image is laminated for longevity and looks stunning on any wall.

Then the metallic print, this has a gorgeous sheen to it and suits a black and white image perfectly. You can also have metallic images in the little black book and the coffee table album.

The little black book ,well OK this isn't new but its such a good album it deserves another mention. Perfect gift for him.

Betsys Boudoir Secrets Tip 1 - Choosing what to wear for your boudoir session is one of the most important aspects for any client. Do be a little bit daring, a boudoir shoot is often a once in a lifetime thing for any girl so wear something fabulous, luxurious but comfortable. Killer heels are also a great idea; they will elongate your leg and add some glitz to your outfit.

Corsets are great for the larger bust where as separates suit the more slim line of us. If your concerned about splashing out on something you think you might only wear once, don’t forget corsets can be teamed with a pencil skirt for a classical and sexy outfit suitable for any night out.

Boudoir Photographer Interview Emma Jones -Miss Boudoir

Next in my series of interviews of fabulous boudoir photographers is Manchesters Emma Jones. Emmas work was an inspiration to me and kind of prompted my own journey into boudoir, because personally I think her work epitomizes 'Boudoir'.

Anyway as always from the person herself, a bit about Emma..

I graduated from Tameside College in 2003 and became self-employed photographing models, bands and actors on location while freelancing to another company shooting weddings.

After 2 years of stressful weddings, bands paying me by means of alcohol and countless model shoots, I yearned to undertake a more interesting type of photography, more rewarding and to find my true purpose. That came in the form of boudoir and vintage glamour.

In Jan 2007 I took a gamble and moved into a new premises. A complete wreck of a place. No electrics, walls, no anything but dirt and darkness. By March we’d (myself, family and friends) managed to transform it into a very personal and unique vintage studio.

2008 saw the renovation of a second room, doubling the size of the original studio.

2009’s current project is a separate, larger premises which is in the process and will hopefully be ready for Autumn and the arrival of Miss Boudoir x™

So lets start with the obvious, why Boudoir?

I’ve always been interested in the human form, lighting it and capturing the mood. But the main push was the number of requests from my model and portrait clients asking for more of a lingerie-glamour style.

I decided to get a bigger studio, undertake the lingerie/glamour but add my own personal interest into the equation which is anything vintage and opulent.

How long have you been photographing Boudoir?

Since March 2007.

How would you describe your style?

Vintage, bold verging on dark, slightly gritty and seductive. Maybe a bit of dreamy in there too.

What did you photograph before you got bitten by the boudoir bug?

Products, weddings, music photography, portraits, models/fashion, hair and beauty and actors headshots.

More about you, where did you grow up?

Mossley “in’t thills” would be the translation. Basical

ly a small town right on the edge of the Pennines with a very high population of over 65’s.

Do you prefer to work in studio or location when it comes to Boudoir?

I have never undertaken boudoir on location, only in my studio. Regardless, I think I would always prefer my studio because I would have all my props and lingerie to hand.

Boudoir photography is still in its infancy in the UK, do you agree?

No, I think its infancy was possibly the summer of 2008. A high number of wedding and portrait photographers now undertake boudoir as an accompaniment to their usual services… and why not?

It reminds me a bit of the venture style invasion; the contemporary white backgrounds became fashionable for funky, highly saturated portraits and exploded everywhere, boudoir seems to be similar.

What’s your favourite boudoir pose?

I don’t really have a favourite boudoir pose. I can only use cert

ain poses with clients if those poses match their personality. Sometimes clients improvise on the directions I give and together we’ll produce a shot that will give me goose bumps. That resulting pose or shot would be my favourite. So I’ll say my preferred pose differs from client to client.

Do you have a favorite photographer living or dead?

What is the best thing for you about shooting Boudoir?

Seeing the personality transformation from when a client arrives to them leaving. When my clients have finished their shoot, they can’t quite believe what they have just done! They become the conquerors - bouncy, confident and ready to take on anything, which is usually a big meal after posing hard and eating healthily for 4 months!

Knowing I have found a way to make a difference to someone’s life or 2 people’s lives is beyond any dream I can have.

Does anyone or anything influence your photography?

OOOO, this is a hard one! I take my influences from everyday life, films, dreams, random crazy ideas I have and the people I photograph.

I think I am slightly old fashioned (if you’d like to call it that) and I believe that what is around us, including emotions is the main influence for many things. Without the desire to please, love, share, change, create and achieve, I know that my photography would be none existent.

My family and partner are definitely on the list. Their belief that I can “make it” and do some good keeps me building, expanding the business and trying new things.

Who is the most important person in your life?

My parents, sister and my partner Colin. I could never choose just one.

Sometimes the initial reaction from people on the street is that I am a glamour photographer, do you get a similar reaction and how do you deal with them?

I undertake some glamour photography but in a vintage style with a contemporary twist, therefore I have no problem with people saying I’m a glamour photographer if they want to.

What I am not is a page 3 photographer. When you say “glamour” to the general public, they think of The Sun newspaper. I explain that what I offer is similar to a Marks & Spencers lingerie advert cross with burlesque and pin-up with a splash of allure. Some people say “that’s cool, I bet you have fun doing that” and others look at me like I’m an undiscovered life form from Mars.

Regardless I have no problems with the type of work I do and enjoy it thoroughly.

If you could shoot with any other photographer in the world who would it be?

I really have no idea! For my sessions, I’m more of a solo photographer who likes no distractions and maximum communication with the client.

Do you provide any wardrobe for your clients? If so what’s your favourite item?

Yes I am a complete hoarder/collector of lingerie!! I must have over 400 lingerie and costume items and Lord knows how many props. The unfortunate things is, I only have half of it on display because I cannot fit the rest in my current studios. However my new premises has a large room solely for wardrobe, which I already know is going to be my play area!

Favourite item, again this is a very hard question. I can’t possibly pick just one; it’d have to be a complete look (can I get away with that?) – a vintage style all in one pale pink net body with bows, fishnet stockings, my very high pink stilettos and one of the black V shaped hats with netting off my dresser.

PC or Mac?

I use both. My first ever computer was a PC (I was 11) but my first work computer was a Mac. I trained on Macs and have been using them for about 9 years now.

For me Macs are the day to day and my PC is there because I like to use that to check things on and for recreation. I also feel it’s important that I keep up to date with both operating systems.

Until the other week, I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t go back to using a PC, even though they’re cheaper and are complete workhorses. Now I know… a Mac you have some form of working relationship with whereas a PC is just a machine.

When you’re not working as a photographer what do you enjoy doing?

Sleeping. I work everyday from the moment I get up to the moment I fall asleep. If I have a day off, I will most likely be going for a hair cut and trying to spend some time with my partner.

The very odd Tuesday I will do the local pub quiz but that is once in a blue moon!

I like cooking and creating so if I had the chance, I’d get some cherry scones baking away and then make a prop for my studio.

Finally any advice you would give to budding boudoir photographers wanting to start out?

Be original. Never undersell yourself. Listen to your client. The most important for me is passion – treat your photography with passion, don’t just see it as a job. Love for what you do will shine through in your photos. Give 500% to each client and be prepared to go the extra mile if it’s going to make someone very happy!

knows/shows nothing about boudoir. But it wasn’t until The Boudoir Divas workshop which I attended, that I realized how amazing this is and how really I want to do it. My goal is to specialize in boudoir photography, but I’m just at the beginning J

So lets start with the obvious, why Boudoir?

Too much magazines, commercials, movies, people… telling women how they should look. Boudoir changes the perception of the world today. If only women had an inch of self-esteem which could tell them that they don`t have to look like “that and that” to be attractive/pretty/beautiful.

How long have you been photographing Boudoir?

Now and then for about a year. Strongly for three months.

How would you describe your style?

Sensual, soft, ladylike, chic.

What did you photograph before you got bitten by the boudoir bug?

Concerts, weddings, places, portraits. A lot.

More about you, where did you grow up?

Zagreb, Croatia. Still living here.

Do you prefer to work in studio or location when it comes to Boudoir?

Both!

What is the best thing for you about shooting boudoir?

Transformation of 'thorns to roses' Making women laugh and happy. Making women feel good about themselves. Seeing the reaction: " OMG this is me?!" :)

Does anyone or anything influence your photography?

I'm influenced by art, architechture, women and french photography

Who is the most important person in your life?
It`s hard to pick just one. I guess I`m lucky having few.
Sometimes the initial reaction from people on the street is that I am a glamour photographer, do you get a similar reaction and how do you deal with them?

If they see you here on the street with a great dressed lady, they would think glamour, fashion, editorial… never boudoir. I explain it`s boudoir and hand them my business card.
If you could shoot with any other photographer in the world who would it be?

Too many to choose.

Do you provide any wardrobe for your clients? If so what’s your favourite item?

Nope, they provide it for themselves. But I LOVE corsets and high heals.

PC.

When you’re not working as a photographer what do you enjoy doing?

Actually I have a full time job in a ticketing company and a part time job as a photographer. Photography is rarely a good money-making job in Croatia.

Any can't live without’ pieces of equipment?

My Fuji S3 camera, Sigma 18-50 mm 2.8 lens and Nikon Speedlight SB 28DX flash.

Finally any advice you would give to budding boudoir photographers wanting to start out?

Go to the Boudoir Divas workshop first. It will all come clear then and there.

You may have noticed that my products and packages have had a bit of an revamp this month. Some new product images and also after researching what you, the client wanted a few new packages thrown into the mix.

The lastest package I think is fabulous, if you have ever wanted to become a 50s pin up girl or fancy yourself more as Marilyn Monroe.

Kareena ( featured in my last blog post and also website vintage gallery) who is also a make up artist will be working with me to give you the authentic hair and make up for your photo shoot. Vintage boudoir photo shoot

A fellow photographer who is just starting out her career joined me yesterday for a studio shoot with model vintage model, Kareena. Amanda mostly photographs dog obedience and is a dog trainer herself, she wants to get more experience photographing people.

Kareena has the most fantasic range of vintage wear in her wardrobe, not to mention her flame red hair, and we got to shoot some of it. Here are a few of my images.

Leah tell us a bit about yourself,

When I was planning my wedding in 2007 I picked up a

camera and took some pictures. Thinking nothing of it, I just kept going. It was a good hobby in the midst of wedding planning. My husband saw the images and not even a week later I had a new camera and was on my way. I started doing engagement sessions, babies and anything else I could get my hands on. I never thought it would turn into a full time career not even 6 months later.

Little did I know, 4 months later my best friend would ask me to do a session for her. I have never even dabbled into boudoir yet alone really looked at any boudoir pictures. She wanted it done for her husband overseas but I turned down the opportunity a couple times. Finally, I knew I had to give in and I am so glad I did.

Ever since then I've been traveling the US doing sessions. It's such a joy to have people who believe in you and in return I pass on the belief to my clients. Every women is sexy!

So lets start with the obvious, why Boudoir?

Honestly, when I started off doing weddings, I never thought I would be doing boudoir. Now I specialize in boudoir and it's roughly 90% of my business. I wouldn't have it any other way. Boudoir needs to spread and reach women everywhere. If I can do it one client at a time then that's the way it shall be done!

How long have you been photographing Boudoir?

January 14 2008 was the first day I ever shoot boudoir.

How would you describe your style?

Fun, sexy, timeless. I want images that won't age over time and make you think, “what was I thinking?” I love to use color opposed to dark black and whites and I love capturing details of the corset, thigh highs, etc. These are images you'll look at 40 years from now and still love!

What did you photograph before you got bitten by the boudoir bug?

I was a wedding and portrait photographer.

More about you, where did you grow up?

I was born in the Milwaukee suburbs and when I was still a baby we moved to Florida. My mom, dad and 3 siblings lived there for 7 years before going back to Wisconsin. Then 4 years ago I moved to Ohio after Eric and I dated long distance for awhile. Now, Lakemore, Ohio is our home.

Do you prefer to work in studio or location when it comes to Boudoir?

I have been doing on location boudoir for about a year now. I have done marathons in Chicago, DC, Boston, NYC, Charlotte, Orlando, San Francisco and Kansas City. With the travel comes the use of lots of hotel rooms. It's always a new challenge though because the space is never the same. Now I have a studio and it's a blast incorporating what I have learned from shooting in so many hotels. I think work in hotels can really open up your creative side though. I go into the plainest hotel room and come out with some hot images!

Boudoir photography is still in its infancy in the UK, how is it seen in the US?

We still have a long way to go here but it's definitely becoming more known. When people ask what I do, I definitely get a raised eyebrow. It's always fun explaining what boudoir entails. I think I need to carry a little album in my purse from now on....

What’s your favorite boudoir pose?

I love straight on shots. I believe that you don't need to be manipulated into some pose to look beautiful. I think the girls look the best straight on, capturing them just as they are. My 2^nd favorite pose would be having them lay on their back, head tilted slightly and look straight up to the camera. It's generally not a position most women are photographed in!

Can you show us some of your recent work?

Do you have a favorite photographer living or dead?

Um many! I could never narrow it down. There are way too many that inspire me on a daily basis.

What is the best thing for you about shooting Boudoir?

The best thing about boudoir is the clients. Everyday I am blessed with a different client and a new situation. It is my job to make them comfortable and break their guard down. Sometimes it's a challenge but who doesn't love a challenge. I am given the opportunity to make women feel beautiful. How is that not the best satisfaction ever?

Does anyone or anything influence your photography?
Everything. I really do get inspiration everywhere I go. During my Charlotte marathon I went into the mall with some friends.. At the Gap I saw an image that really inspired me so I took a picture with my iphone. I incorporated that into a session the following day.

Who is the most important person in your life?

My husband Eric. He is amazing beyond belief. :-)

I know here in the UK some peoples initial reaction is that I am a glamour aka nude photographer, do you get a similar reaction and how do you deal with them?

Like I said earlier, I definitely get a raised eyebrow. I need to explain it to most people and also teach they how to say boudoir. Once I tell people to think of pin up work then they really start to understand it. I've never had a bad reaction from it and in most cases it really intrigues the person and they only want to know more!

If you could shoot with any other photographer in the world who would it be ?

I am picking two! Wedding wise it would be Angelica Glass. Seriously, that girl has style.

Boudoir wise it would be The Boudoir Divas hands down.

Do you provide any wardrobe for your clients? If so whats your favorite item ?

The only thing I provide is jewelery from the ever popular, Forever 21. I always find that, that is the one thing that most girls don't remember to bring. Also, it's always fun to accessorize. I hope in the future to add more accessories and probably a size range of red heels. You always feel sexy in red heels!

PC or Mac?

Funny thing is, I used to hate MAC's. Now I cannot go a day without.

When you’re not working as a photographer what do you enjoy doing?

Relaxing! I love spending time with my husband and our 2 dogs. I'm very laid back and quite the homebody. We just moved into our new home so I love laying outside on the patio and also decorating! I enjoy reading travel magazines and I am a huge HGTV addict! Oh, I also love sports, especially basketball!

Finally any advice you would give to budding boudoir photographers wanting to start out?

Be patient, practice and be committed to the journey you're about to embark on. When I first started, my business bloomed overnight and there was no looking back. Remember your clients are the reason you are here and in this business, it's all about client satisfaction.

Well Gill is the first UK boudoir photographer in my series of interviews, sit back, read and enjoy.

Gill, tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a near-40 (did I honestly just admit to that)

photographer based in the Midlands, UK. I live with my husband

of 14 years, my 2 cats and my puppy. Photography has been my passion since high school, but I only started my own business and started shooting professionally in 2005 … I’ve never been happier in my work life than I am now, this is the b

est profession in the world ! I love bringing out the best in people, delving into who they are and showing them off at their absolute best.

My absolute favourite feedback from any client … “is that really me!” … truly satisfying and heart-warming !

Oh, some personal information … I’m a neat-freak, I love animals, I ride motorbikes and have tattoos (both of these things made my parents soooo proud LOL), I’m a very loyal friend and I’m a bit of a geek ! Not in any particular order.

So lets start with the obvious, why Boudoir?

I, like many other women, have a load of hang-ups about my looks, so when I was offered a boudoir shoot of me while I was in the States last year, I actually hid. After some wine, however, I gave in and had a wonderful time ! The photos were amazing and I felt so good about myself that I wanted to offer other women the same opportunity.

How long have you been photographing Boudoir?

I actually did a bridal boudoir shoot in 2007 at the request of one of my brides but didn’t really start properly until 2008 when I got back from the States, having had my own amazing experience.

How would you describe your style?

Gritty, sassy, fun, sexy, intimate (hence Intimately You !)

What did you photograph before you got bitten by the boudoir bug?

Weddings and portraits, which I still do.

More about you, where did you grow up?

I was born in Belfast and lived in the suburbs there until I moved to Scotland in 1997 to be with my husband. We now live in the midlands and I miss being close to the sea, every single day. I grew up literally a 5 minute walk to the nearest beach, the sea has such a calming influence and the ability to just go clear the cobwebs and walk barefoot in the sand is something I wish I still had.

Do you prefer to work in studio or location when it comes to Boudoir?

I try to use natural light where absolutely possible for boudoir, so studio lighting isn’t really for me … I decorated a bedroom in my home to look like a high-end hotel room and that is where I do the majority of my shooting. However, I really want toget someone brave enough to do an environmental shoot out and about somewhere really grungy

Boudoir photography is still in its infancy in the UK, do you agree?

This is interesting … some studios have been offering this sort of photography for years, but the awareness is starting to spread, women are getting braver about photography and actively searching out this sort of shoot.

What’s the oddest photographic request you’ve ever had?

Ah, I’ll never forget it … I got a call from a male prostitute asking for photos of him in his various posing pouches and little outfits *eek*

What’s your favourite boudoir pose?

Lying on stomach, high heels caught up on g-string … man, that shot is just sexy through and through

Can you show us some of your recent work?

Do you have a favorite photographer living or dead?

Jerry Ghionis … I love how he ‘sees’ women, his posing and lighting techniques are amazing.

Mario Testino … his portrait work blows me away, particularly the use of grain and movement in his work. Awe-inspiring

What is the best thing for you about shooting Boudoir?

Getting to know my clients, understanding their hang-ups and overcoming them together, seeing their faces as they check the back of the camera on occasion, getting their feedback and of course feedback from their “man”.

Does anyone or anything influence your photography?

The above photographers’ work. I’m also a people-watcher, I love seeing how people move and hold themselves. When I’m watching something on TV or in a movie, I’m looking to see how they lit a certain scene and how they place people in order to get the best out of them. High end fashion magazines (Harpers, Cosmo, etc) are also a favourite source of inspiration.

Who is the most important person in your life?

My husband, best friend, accountant and biggest supporter, John.

Sometimes the initial reaction from people on the street is that I am a glamour photographer, do you get a similar reaction and how do you deal with them?

I truly thought this was going to be a problem when I embarked on boudoir photography, but I’ve not encountered this. Yet. To be honest, there is a fine line between what we do and glamour, I think boudoir is just a little more tasteful and a little less obvious.

If you could shoot with any other photographer in the world who would it be ?

Do you provide any wardrobe for your clients? If so what’s your favourite item?

Mostly, I tell them what to bring. However, I did have to loan one client a pair of stilettos for the g-string shot and another had to borrow a rather sexy Calvin Klein see-through bra/knickers set – very hot ! Oh, and Ione of my husband’s crisp, white shirts always gets an airing.

PC or Mac?

When you’re not working as a photographer what do you enjoy doing?

Playing with my dog, drinking wine, watching a really good movie snuggling on the sofa with the family (2 cats, a dog and a hubby), surfing my favourite forums and driving.

Any ‘can’t live without’ piece of equipment?

50mm 1.2 canon lens … my favourite boudoir lens.

Finally any advice you would give to budding boudoir photographers wanting to start out?

Have a shoot done of yourself, first and foremost, it truly helps you appreciate you’re your clients are feeling in front of your camera. Practice on your friends. Have confidence, clients won’t trust you if you aren’t.

Boudoir Interview 2 Kylene Cleaver

Interviews were to be monthly but Ive had such a good response and great guests lined up, cant wait that long. Today I am talking to Kylene Cleaver a Boudoir photographer who's company Simply Beautiful is based in Delaware, USA.

Changing the format slightly in that so far my guests do such a good introduction about themselves, I'll leave it as is.

So Kylene, tell us a bit about yourself

I love long walks on the beach, running after my 3 year old son, watching period films made by the BBC .

My love of the visual arts started at an early age.
Growing up I was encouraged to take classes in everything artistic. Ballet was my main focus from kindergarten through college. My dad always had a camera in hand at every performance. As I grew up so did his camera.

I frequently remember him shooting with his Canon film SLR. Seeing what he was able to capture along with looking through every ballet book known to man. So I guess you could say my ballet background has had a lot to do with my boudoir work. The way I compose my shots and pose my subjects tends to be very feminine and romantic.

I also tend to shoot my boudoir sessions with a wide open aperture which I've found was my magic bullet that brought my vision to life. How I got into shooting boudoir is a bit of a funny story and all thanks to my hair dresser. She called me up to do some images for her husband and I thought she had family portraits in mind, but she had other ideas.
The images turned out amazing and she spread the word of mouth about my new business like wildfire. And the rest as they say is history.

Down to the probing questions, lets start with the obvious, why Boudoir?

As I'm sure you've heard this before, I believe that every woman deserves to feel beautiful. Whether it be for him, for her (we're equal opportunity :-) )or just for yourself.

How long have you been photographing Boudoir?

Just a little over a year.

How would you describe your style?

Understated and elegant. Simply Beautiful...hence the name :-)

What did you photograph before you got bitten by the boudoir bug?

Weddings, engagements, families and children. I have also done a little editorial work.

More about you, where did you grow up?

I grew up on the East Coast of the U.S. close to Philadelphia. We're close to the ocean, about 2hours from New York City and the Appalachian mountains are about 3 hours west of us. It honestly was a amazing place to grow up.

Do you prefer to work in studio or location when it comes to Boudoir?

Both. I shoot both in studio and on location. I also love to shoot outdoors in natural light.

Boudoir photography is still in its infancy in the UK, how is it seen in the US?

In my opinion, It's gaining popularity, but when you mention you are a "Boudoir Photographer" be ready to hand over your card fast to show your work so that they don't get the wrong idea. A lot of times the first reaction is "Like Glamour Shots?"

Whats your favourite boudoir pose?

I love to do a arched back showing the mouth and the upper legs in the shot. Like this one....

Can you show us some more of your recent work?

Do you have a favorite photographer living or dead?

I LOVE Louis Greenfield. Her dance photography is amazing!

What is the best thing for you about shooting Boudoir?

The reaction I get from the women I photograph and significant others. Nothing makes me feel better to hear that they felt beautiful and loved the images.

Does anyone or anything influence your photography?

Light and shadows. While I give my clients direction I let the little things they do inspire me to capture who they are, like a drop of the eyes or a playful look.

Who is the most important person in your life?

My husband and my son...sorry I know that's two :-)

If you could shoot with any other photographer in the world who would it be ?

I have some vintage hats, pearl necklaces and I have a few pairs of heels. The strands of pearls have to be my favorite and the most used item.

PC, but the way it been behaving a Mac isn't far away.

When you’re not working as a photographer what do you enjoy doing?

I love to go hiking with our dogs. It's great for clearing my mind and finding inspiration. I also love love love to bake anything chocolate! Brownies anyone?

Finally any advice you would give to budding boudoir photographers wanting to start out?

Learn lighting and study posing. I really suggest getting magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Maxim, etc. Tear out the images that inspire you and place them in a folder. You can then go through the folder before shoots and get inspired on posing and lighting. I even take my folders to shoots with me to show my clients what I'm going for and how I would like to pose them. Clients will tend to have a better idea of what you're going for if you give them a visual.

Radio Boudoir

Just over a week ago whilst twittering away, I found local radio station presenter Frances Finn. I followed their shows blog and never thought any more about it.

So next day surprise as a call from BBC radio Nottingham asking if I would like to go on the show to talk about Boudoir photography. So today was the day, I was nervous even though I knew I shouldn't be, sometimes you just cant help it.

Its one of those possible nightmare scenarios where you dream you are going to go all Father Jack on the proceedings and only be able to shout the word pants over and over again, until you wake up in a cold sweat and realise it was just a dream.

It went very quickly, after taking an hour to get into the city, we waited (we being myself and mum, who really really wanted to see the studio, and put across the argument that she was older than anyone else there for should get to go!)

Everyone was lovely, listened to the previous guests then in we go, it went so fast, I think I did OK, hate listening to my own voice, I sound far more Derbyshire than I do in my own head.

Boudoir Photographer Cathy Empey - Interviewed

In the first of my Boudoir photographer interviews, Id like to introduce you to a photographer whos work and style I admire. Cathy Empey is a boudoir photographer in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada.

Heres where I would go on to tell you a bit more about her but as she does it so well herself, take it away Cathy…

I am left handed, and I look through my camera with my right eye! When I was pregnant with my sixth and final baby, I had some professional maternity photos done of myself. Even though I weighed over 200 pounds at the time, and I had huge cankles...I still felt beautiful and sexy.

My photographer at the time (and now friend) made me feel absolutely beautiful. So, after my little girl Courtney was born in mid November 2007, I decided I wanted to help other women feel beautiful and sexy too. I figured if I feel this way, I know there are many other women that felt exactly the same way I did. So, I decided then and there I wanted to be able to give this wonderful experience to others. So, I talked to my now friend, and she came over and gave me a lesson on her digital SLR, and she loaned it to me for a week. And she loaned me a book on exposures.

That week was the best week ever. Between feeds, and diaper changes I would shoot away. It was exactly what was missing in my life. My creativity and passion came back! It was a very thrilling feeling to be able to create again. I hadn't used a camera in manual since my high school 20 years ago. It felt great to use a camera other than a point and shoot. After that week was up. I gave the camera back to my friend.

The very same week my husband looked on our local Craigslist and bought me the same type of camera. I was thankful to my husband for all of his encouragement. Finally I found my creative side again, and even happier I could use my camera to help make women feel beautiful and sexy. My passion found again.

At first I was too nervous to photograph a real woman, so I practiced first on my girls' Barbies, I soon found the courage to shoot my first boudoir session in August of 2008. And I was hooked. And the emails and calls began. I have been booked solid ever since! I am so thankful for all of the sessions I have done. Each and every woman unique, and I love finding their sexy beauty. Amazing!

Now Down to some questions

So lets start with the obvious, why Boudoir?
I am very passionate about helping ALL women feel sexy and beautiful. My camera is my tool to help me do just that. I believe that ALL women must have a boudoir session for themselves. I knew I wanted to help others feel the way I did during my maternity shoot. The realization that we are all beautiful and sexy. Sometimes we just need an outside person to help us find it. That is where I come in. My job is to find that beauty! I have the best job in the whole world

How long have you been photographing Boudoir?
August of this year will mark one year. It has been a very exciting time in my life, and I look forward to continuing working with lovely women from all over.

How would you describe your style?
My style is modern, fresh and saucy. Sassy sexy photographs for all women.

What did you photograph before you got bitten by the boudoir bug?
Up until the beginning of last year, the only photos I took were photos of my kids, and family members. On my old point and shoot. I would take the odd photos of flowers in the yard etc.

More about you, where did you grow up?
I was born in Vancouver, B.C. and raised in Richmond, B.C. Canada. We now live in Langley, B.C. Canada.

I have relatives in Canada I’ve never met, would love to visit for a holiday soon, do you have a favourite holiday destination?
Hmmm. It is hard to narrow down to one location! I would have to say Whistler, BC. Home to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Also, you should go to Victoria, B.C. It is beautiful there! Be sure to Google!

Boudoir photography is still in its infancy in the UK, how is it seen in Canada?
I know there are quite a few photographers that shoot boudoir, but very few if any who specialize in boudoir like I do. I love specializing in boudoir!

What’s your favourite boudoir pose?
Hmmm. There are so many that I like, but I would have to say a more traditional boudoir poses, but with a twist.

Can you show us some of your recent work?

Do you have a favorite photographer living or dead?
Hmmm. I would have to say Annie Leibovitz. She is so inspiring. I remember that pregnant Demi Moore Vanity Fair cover so very well. I remember I was pregnant at the time, and thought she is really brave! The cover paved the way for us all!

What is the best thing for you about shooting Boudoir?
I would have to say the best thing about shooting Boudoir is making the women feel sexy and beautiful. I love to meet all of these great women, they all have such interesting stories and backgrounds. And, of course their reasons for doing their boudoir sessions. I also love that I get to do maternity boudoir as well. The pregnant form is so beautiful. And because I was pregnant so much, I feel I can relate very well to how my client is feeling. I can relate to how ALL of my clients are feeling, because I have been there. I have felt the same feelings, and so I feel I can give them a very happy experience that they will remember for a very long time. I also love it when they see the finished photos and cannot believe that they could look that good! And they ALWAYS do! It is very rewarding to see my clients so very happy.

Does anyone or anything influence your photography?
I am really influenced by shapes, and colour. Textures even. I also love to look through magazines, and even photos online. But, I also stay true to my style. I shoot what I love. And usually it works. I try not to compare my work to other Boudoir photographers. I really work on my own Cathy style. I am an original, and so my work should be too!

Who is the most important person in your life?
I would have to say my husband Cliff (also my biggest support person!) And of course how can I not include my six kids. My team Empey.

I know here in the UK some peoples initial reaction is that I am a glamour aka nude photographer, do you get a similar reaction and how do you deal with them?
I have never had a reaction like that yet! So far so good. Boudoir seems to pretty popular Canada. But my goal is to make it even more well known. And shout out to the world that Boudoir photography is for every woman!

If you could shoot with any other photographer in the world who would it be?
Hmmm. That is so tough to limit to just one person. I would have to say Jessica Claire. (www.jessicaclaire.net) as I think she would be fun to hang out with and talk about hair products! I also like her use of colour! I am all about the colour!

Do you provide any wardrobe for your clients? If so whats your favourite item?
I do not provide wardrobe, but I have been known to lend out my own high heels if they are needed! I do give a lot of wardrobe help though before the sessions, so that my clients come to me well prepared, and feeling like a million dollars! That feeling shines through in the photos. When they look good, they feel great!

PC or Mac? I am am MAC girl all the way!

When your not working as a photographer what do you enjoy doing?
Well, I would have to say go running. I was training for a marathon, but I got injured. So, I am trying to rest and heal my injury. When I am not running I like to go out for coffee with husband, and with my friends. Or, just surf the net.

Finally any advice you would give to budding boudoir photographers wanting to start out?
Take your time and learn everything about your camera. Get a book and write down all of your ideas and dreams for your business. Be sure to take lots and lots of photos. Not just Boudoir. Photograph everything around you! Be confident that you can shoot in any situation. Then, start practicing. Ask your friends if you can do a free session for them, and before you know it, you will have lots of clients. Good luck. It has been so rewarding to help other women realize just how beautiful they are.

Yesterday was a day for Bridal Boudoir in the studio. Make up was provided by Toni , simple light and elegant to suit the brides to be.

Pleased to see the weather is improving, we are currently reinventing the front and back garden at home, Ive been buying plants here there and everywhere and today put up my first hanging basket kindly donated by my mum. Now its just a case of remembering to water it!!

I hope you are all having a great bank holiday weekend and getting the BBQs out.

More excitingly, Ive been making up a general interview for Boudoir photographers around the world. So watch this space for our first interviewee in a few days time. Right back to the garden, then that BBQ.

Well its completed, and we love it. my favourite wall is this jaquard inspired design, it just screams Boudoir in my opinion. Its taken a lot of work but now down to the fun bit, photography. Cant wait.......

April Update

I can't beleive its April already, March flew by and with only a couple of weeks left before the studio refurbishment needs to be ready i've been looking like casper the friendly ghost for the last week, covered in plaster.

New wallpaper, furnishings and furniture complimenting each other are still sat in bags ready to go in, cant wait for that bit
Although as DIY goes Im not too bad, Hubs has been helping and its been a lot of fun. Updating the accessories and adding some vintage glamour items is also top of the list.

Well its a quick post, signing off for now, but will update with images soon.

I am so excited to have a brand new product range , still keeping the colour scheme but adding a little more pep!

Nosing through facebook the other day and I noticed two US photographers known as the Boudoir Divas.

Its interesting to see the girls Marissa Boucher & Kimberlee West marketing to other photographers and although everything looks to be in its infancy thier products look interesting to the UK as well as the US market.

Airbrushing , Retouching , Editing

Call it what you will.

I like to keep my images as close to natural as possible.

There is always the probability that a client will want a significant amount of retouching on their image. However usually I try to encourage just a light retouch , removing blemishes etc , the false smooth look where by the technique of blurring is used can cause a subject to look plastic or just too 80's .

Below is an image Ive taken from a previous shoot, this is just a light retouch and removal of jewellery which has fallen awkwardly in the pose.

I have used the process of masking to keep the skin texture using Christy Schulers technique. I have also processed the eyes and lightly retouched the hair.

.... I'm seeing time and time again is the change in clients during their photo shoot, seeing a nervous woman turn into a very confident sassy woman in front of the camera really does make this job even more worth while. It really is all about being confident and happy with your own body, and with Gok making the first move its only right that we should continue the good work!

As I know my clients read my blog ( love you all) just a quick note to say I must get your album and print image choices in by 6th December, the last date the printers can guarantee images being back on time for Christmas is the 11th December.

Boudoir Party

Thursday saw our first Boudoir party, which I am pleased to say went very well.

All the girls had a fab time and even brought me a box of choccies! Working till 1am then having another shoot the morning after did mean the coffee was flowing but still better to be busy and tired than not busy at all.

A couple of the girls were happy for me to use their images for the website and other things so here are just a few of the images from the shoot. Nothing too revealing so you dont need to cover your eyes just yet.

I had seen a few masquerade masks on ebay and thought one might make a nice edition to my 'boudoir box' full of props. However after spending far too much time searching and saving items in 'my ebay' I still couldn't see them up close and never got around to choosing.

So how strange I found it today, walking past a shop I've walked past time and time again, that there it was a red and gold mask with feathers my cats would adore (and no doubt my husband would allow them to play with!) sat high up on the top shelf of their window display. Its ones of those shops I lovingly call 'weirdy shops' you know the sort, smells divine, full of incense sticks, mirrors, wood carvings, candles, one of those shops you just get lost in.

But it was closed, then I realised that it was actually owned by the flower shop, which was open!

Happily they opened up and this lovely mask is now mine .

That's the theme for this weekend and the next few days.

I've been buying fabrics like a mad woman for the temporary studio, (as the new one is expectedly behind schedule) Its nice to be able to go a little OTT with rich reds and golds and that all important black.

I wanted to use the window in the room as a feature, so bought some frosting to stick on. Have you ever fitted that stuff? its a nightmare, I ended up sticking and peeling and re-peeling, it just does not want to go on wrinkle free, it hates me!

Adding to the list of 'grr' moments, today my kettle broke , it kept boiling and boiling and boiling, steaming up the kitchen leaving water dripping off every surface, a week before our tumble dryer went 'poof'. I just hope next week there's no major catastrophes as I have booked the first Boudoir party shoot for the festive season.

That's right I think I am safe to mention the dreaded C word now without being battered over the head with a pickled herring because its too early. When can we start singing carols?....

Welcome to my new blog, specially made for showcasing my Boudoir work.

When I started taking on this type of photography, it didn't surprise me how misunderstood it was.
Its difficult to describe but what it isn't is playboy! its about women getting photographs that make them feel confident and show them at their best. Everyday women not models, in fact I only use real women on my site.

The most popular reason for booking a boudoir shoot is as a gift for hubby or hubby to be, but it also goes much further, as every client gets a make over and most usually arrive feeling a little nervous but leave feeling confident and happy about themselves and above all have a good laugh.

My blog will slowly replace photographs by helen and contain news and views on this side of the industry.
